Senior!

Smash is back to school as a Grade 12 Senior!  Here he reluctantly posting for a photo.  Note the small one has no such reluctance...

Here he is driving off to school (with his Dad, he's only on a Learners, but still...).

Soccer, Picnics, and Epilepsy

Saturday is school soccer day round these parts, this weekend Smash's game was at the Gold Coast (an hour or so from our place), and we had a picnic to go to for lunch, so our Saturday was loading up the kids and having driving adventures.

It was a gorgeous day, and the school's soccer fields were literally right on the water.
And they have a coffee van.  Awesome.
Smoochy
The girls were cute.  And Smash's team even won (I'm not big on watching the soccer games, I confess, I have to ask him after the game is over.  4-nil apparently...so, Go Team!).

I love this po-faced cafe set shot of Snail.  She's about to sneeringly judge someone's fashion, whilst reading the New Yorker.

Snail, generously sharing DinnerDad's coffee with DinnerDad

Wheelchair on the water
One long drive back into West End (where DinnerDad has the awesomeness that is a carpark for work) and an even longer walk along the river to go to the Cerebral Palsy League's Picnic in the Park.  I should have reconsidered the long walk given my current lung capacity.  *gasp, cough, splutter* Damn colds.

DinnerDad, Snail, and Smash on the boardwalk at Southbank (Brisbane River) during an enforced rest.
Anyhoo, after much whinging (me), and wheeling (the girls) we made it to the CPL picnic, got ourselves some delicious woodfired pizzas for lunch, and that's when the seizures started.  Nothing too major, seizure-wise, but enough that Snail was pretty floppy and disinterested in stuff, getting short seizures, laughing and limbs flailing, and so on.  We gave her some meds and beat a hasty retreat, as short seizures are often the precursor to big, tonic clonic seizures, and dealing with major seizures in the middle of the city is never our idea of a good time.  She missed out on riding the Liberty Swing *sad face*.

One quick bounce for Lolly on her first ever giant bouncing castle was all we managed.  And while she was on there I was finding meds for Snail and generally making a shitty face at life.

Being a "green horsey" on the bouncing castle.
5 minutes of actual fun at the picnic, then we all turned round, walked the long walk back to the car, and came home.

If I ever meet Epilepsy face to face, I'm kicking it in the balls.

A video about Snail, by Smash

Smash made a slideshow for a school project about a special person, and he chose Snail as his person. This is a really lovely 'video' about Snail and why she is special to her brother.

A week of doings!

Here is an update post on some of our doings over the past week or so, with plenty of photos for extra cuteness!

Last Saturday, while DinnerDad was repairing the whippersnipper, the girls had some outside bathtime fun near the garage!

"Big" hand, little foot!

Last Sunday we embarked on our driving adventure/experiment, which went really well up til the 20 minutes of screaming on the way home. *sigh* We went out via the Warrego and round via the dams up to Mount Glorious, with a stop for a bushwalk and hotdogs for lunch, and then a coffee.

Bushwalking with a wheelchair is fun!! Snail peeping at me...

Wheel over a stream.

Stairs!!!

Just before Smash stacked it :)

Lolly in the Ergo.

It was the hour long drive home that did Lolly in. She was tired, but not tired enough, and really got upset for a good quarter hour plus. There was a stop for booba, and for me to swap with Smash in the back, to little effect once we got going again. It was pretty harrowing til she fell asleep. I find that kind of crying in the car so difficult as it's like I abandoned her to her terrible four-wheeled fate. All her other crying is in-arms (and she's not a big cryer anyway), to hear her screaming and sobbing because of the car is heartbreaking to me. Hence the lack of much car travelling over the past 6 months. Before that, I had become pretty adept at timing trips with her naps, and we actually drove a lot that way. Now, naps aren't reliable and there is more objection, which is gradually easing up as she gets older and more interested in everything. Here's to a cruisy car future as she grows to be more entertained by it all! Living out here where even getting to the local shops is 10 minutes driving, and getting to anywhere entertaining is at least 15 minutes, it has been a bit difficult. Lolly is now pretty reliably happy to travel for 15-20 minutes, which is enough to get a fair few places for me. With lots of interesting things (facewashers to suck on, cups of water, teething rusks, lots and lots of interesting toys, my wallet, the nappy bag, etc etc etc) she can get 30 minutes.

We had a busy week, Smash is taking tennis lessons and we all trucked over there Tuesday night, DinnerDad had a major week at work (and just got a super cool promotion!) so there was a lot of Selene and the girls afternoons. Went well though, it's much easier to deal with them both now Lolly is a little older. Phew!

Afternoon snacking on plums!

School is tiring!

More on our gardening works soon!

Lolly update

Well, Lolly is talking! She says "dadda" and points to DinnerDad, and says "booba" and pokes me - sometimes she says "mumumumum" and means me too. We take her out at night to look around and she said "star" (like "sssaaahhh") and points up into the sky. This is adorability in the extreme. Last night she said star a lot, and pointed up, apparently you have to say "star" in a whisper, my theory is (other than cutosity maxing out) that this is how she can make the sound. She's also making a "at" sound that is pretty reliable, to mean "cat."

So there you go! She has been saying star for a few days, and dadda pretty well for a week or two. 10 months and talking!

Still not crawling, but she has a lovely 'bum shuffle' that gets her a couple of feet, very slowly indeed. Perhaps she's been observing Snail. :-)

She loves music, and dances by bouncing herself up and down and grinning at you. Her little flowers play two tunes that she very much enjoys, and she gets them going and then dances. She has also been bashing her animal keyboard and getting it to "go" and dancing.

She is such a keen observer, she looks hard at things to comprehend them, and points with her finger. Her favourite things to point at are my bellybutton, which she has pointed into a raw kind of state!, and my nose ring, which she hooks out at least 20 times a day with much evident enjoyment.

Lolly is loving her brother and sister, she plays with Snail, and loves to see Smash and giggle at him. He likes to entertain her with silly faces, and she cracks up everytime! Bathtime with the Snail is also lots of splashy fun, even if Mumma or Dadda have to sit with their legs in between the girls in case of Snail-y flailing around with those long strong leggies.

Here is Lolly and Snail looking at Smash being funny - "you're hilarious, Smash!"

Lolly loves the pets, and does a leg wiggle and giggle whenever she sees them. She loves to pat the cat, and the dogs when she can get em. Pippin is a week and a half out from her knee surgery, so is shut into the Lolly room, and is not to come out and hurt herself, but old Mr Bajak potters about to amuse the Lolly. You have to be careful of his head end though as he often thinks anything coming towards him is food. And the other end also requires some caution...

Here are the girls 'busted' getting the cat!

Oh, and Lolly does this hilarious thing we taught her one night. She was clutching her head and whinging a bit, and we were mimicking her going "owwww" and throwing our hand up on our heads all melodramatic, which she thought was very amusing. Now she is doing this "ohhhh owwwww ohhhhh" and clutching her head with her little hands! Sometimes she pulls her hair, I think she has only recently discovered her hair, as she does it. It is a very melodramatic performance baby! She finds it very funny, and sometimes all of us are doing it at once, what a lot of artistes. Tre tragic indeed.

Lolly is up late and sleeps late, we're back to 10am for getting up now, which is a bit better than midday! She is up until at least 12.30 at nights, hanging with the mumma.

Reading a book, "I'm not sure I like the way the plot is heading, Mumma!"

And here is a lovely shot of the Snail!

Smash is in grade 9 this year! Only back at school a week and already studying...

A Photo a Day Challenge - 365 Photos for 2009

I am doing this Challenge, where you commit to taking a photo a day for the whole year. I got the idea from Anaed at her lovely blog, words. And her photos so far are simply lovely. Well, I actually only decided to do it on the 5th of January, so will have to go a few days into 2010 to get the full "year"!

Here is my first photo (which I happened to take on the first of January!):

See my Album here. I'll post them on the blog when I can, too.

In family news, Lolly is, we think, teething, and has had rough nights all week. She had a fever early in the week, and a couple of unhappy spews, too, poor love. It is a kidlet week, and we've been relaxing a lot. We did manage the Art Gallery yesterday, and some lunch and shopping today. DinnerDad is off work for 3 weeks, which is fab!

And check out our new family blogs! DinnerDad and Games R Me

Here is yesterday's photo, I couldn't resist the yoghurt-y face!

I am taking a lot of portrait shots at the moment, my third shot is of Smash (not a good one, but needed a shot for that day!), and I photograph Lolly all the time. Am loving my new Canon EOS 40D. Loving it a lot!

Gotta go, bub crying and hopefully she's off to sleep soon!

Sydney!

Bub and Smash and I went on an adventure to Sydney last week! There was a festival weekend there with some friends, and we went down early and came back late to see some family and some sights.

Lolly and went down on Thursday, with a dear friend and her gorgeous girl. We stayed right in the city, in a nice apartment just off Oxford Street. Okay, so it could have been airconditioned in the bedrooms and had less drunk people walking past at 3 am yelling abuse at each other, but hey, it was okay. Well, we were completely lacking in sleep for the first couple of nights, but we lived... Here is Lol in her 'Security' shirt when we arrived.

On the Friday I took Lolly out to meet her great-grandmother and great-uncle! It was a fun train ride, and we had lunch and went back to Grandma's for a bit, then trained home. It was lovely to see them!! Lolly liked the train and slept most of the way.

Saturday morning Lolly and I went to pick up Smash from the airport, then we all went on a bus adventure to a Sydney online friend's to meet up with the festival people! It was so great to meet everyone in real life, and to see all the lovely chidlers and bubs, a really wonderful day.

The group met up again at the beach on Sunday, a lovely small netted beach on the Harbour, with a great cafe to provide much needed caffiene! Lolly had her first dip in the sea, though I had forgotten to charge the camera, so no photos :(. We had a lovely day all round.

Sightseeing on Monday with friends on the Harbour. Here is Smash doing some street theatre!

Taronga Zoo on Tuesday, which was great fun (though I was a bit sick) - here is Smash and R watching the bird show.

Smash and Lolly outside the reptile house.

And, thanks to M, who took most of the wonderful photos that day, some giraffes!

We were all very tired and happy to be home again Wednesday. It was a wonderful trip, lots of good friends, nice food, good chats, and fun times.

Lolly and I have been sick ever since with a tummy bug and then a cold, so no news since, really. Snail is on holidays now too, Lolly and I are home recuperating in front of the telly.

Water, water, everywhere!

We have had a few water themed events here over the past couple of weeks! Of course, there are the floods and storms of the past weeks, we were fine here, thank goodness, didn't even lose power! Just near us some roads were out - Dave took some shots of the flooding nearby (this was on Thursday last week):

We had our watertank installed (just after the big storm the weekend before last, in time to collect rain all last week!). It's a 5000l tank and is plumbed to the toilet. We're also going to use some of this water for the vege garden. Not that we've needed to water the garden in a couple of weeks with all the rain! We got a great deal on the tank, installation and all for the price of the rebates! Yay!

And, finally, we all went swimming in the spa for the first time this season. This was Lolly's first ever swim in a pool! She loved it! Snail is a total waterbaby and loves to swim, so was very happy to hop in and play. Smash helped!

In an unrelated photo op - here is Lolly investigationing Pippin our dog. Needless to say, Pippi is a very loving creature who is great with kids!

Smash is 13!

Today is Smash's birthday - we can't quite believe he is 13 years old today!!! Happy birthday Smash!! At 13, Smash is an amazing person, funny, wise, (mostly) thoughtful ;-), creative, loves his sisters, and cooks a mean dinner!

Here is an extremely foolish photo of Smash from a couple of weeks ago (just in case he was feeling all mature and wise)...

ps - Lolly is cute!

pps - Snail is also cute!!

Family doings

This is a bit of a catch up post on all our family doings.

We have been busy lately, last week was hard going with Dave out for the count with a horrible flu most of it, he was really sick! Snail and Dave went to her class frog day at Currumbin Sanctuary on Thursday, here is a pic:

I particularly like this sign Dave saw there about the evils of domestic cats! He took a photo for me (I'm the only one here who loves my cat, Alia, it's quite the family joke).

In garden news, Dave finished the wheelchair ramp!!! It just needs oiling. It is a true masterpiece of home engineering. We're planning a proper opening ceremony soon, with Snail as the ribbon cutter!

The veges are recovering (mostly) from the war with Mr Nemesis. The veges are fully fenced and we had to put tent pegs in to hold down the wire, too. Still no other bed due to the great influenza plague of 2008 knocking out all our workers (ie Dave). But we are planning another lot of vege beds, and some fruit trees too. We are getting a 5000 litre water tank installed soon, too, for the cost of the rebates!

In the Lolly chronicles, she is 7 months old!!!!! She enjoys sitting up, a skill she only just mastered unassisted in the last few days. Here she is on Sunday.

Her shirt informs us that her nappy has gone over to the dark side, hehe. She also enjoyed some steamed carrot on Friday night, and a rusk last night.

Last weekend Lolly and I headed to Daboro for my step-grandmother's 80th birthday! We had a lovely lunch and a lot of fun, and we got all the way there and back with naps/being happy in the car, well over an hour each way! Spent some lovelt time with Jubes too, she and Mum are away camping at the moment, I miss them!

We spent some lovely time at gatherings of other mum's and bubs on Thursday and Friday, and Lolly and I also went to the baby-wearer's sling meet at Indooroopilly on Saturday. There are some pics of us here at the facebook group. This pic is one of Lol having a boob to sleep in the Ergo, while the shirt I'm wearing says: If my breastfeeding offends you feel free to put a blanket over your head. Bit of a laff.

On Saturday we picked up Smash and went to my SIL's engagement party! Congrats to you two, S and M (he he). It was our first night excursion (other than a trip or two out for KFC, lol), and it went okay. She was fine, but the restaurant was very loud, so Dave and I spent much of our time walking with her up and down the street outside :-). She also screamed most of the way home, very tired but too stimulated, just wanted mum and a boob. Poor Lolly. She rarely really cries, and it's always heartbreaking. We are holding off on "out" trips at night for now, though someone's house would probably be okay.

And finally, an irresistable pic of some Snail-y dancing, and one from last month of Smash skating.
